| ABOUT THE CRISIS

In Geneva, Switzerland, the world prepares itself for something it has never seen before. At the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, better known as CERN, researchers are preparing to boot up the Large Hadron Collider for the first time. The LHC is the largest particle accelerator in the world, and will be used for colliding an abundance of particles, in the hopes of finding some answers to the cosmic and subatomic mysteries that humanity has pondered for decades. 

The presentation, of the start of the LHC’s first run, is scheduled for September 10, 2008. However, some rumors have been swirling around that the machine was sabotaged, post-inspection, and that it could potentially lead to unimaginable disaster when started up. 

Delegates, representing important political and scientific figures of the time, will need to weigh the choice to delay the start-up, potentially jeopardizing CERN’s funding, against the choice to try and save humanity from a catastrophe that may or may not be a real threat. From spinning electrons to spinning galaxies, the decisions made in this committee will directly impact the future of particle physics, and of humanity as a whole.
